As I mentioned briefly on my WrestleMania post the other day, I was introduced to “the man” around 1992. Up until this point, I was only aware that there was WWF. I had no knowledge of others. There were several Starcade tapes I never made the selection to take home from my local Video Shelf store. And then later I was given severl Pro Wrestling Illustrated issues that made me aware of War Games and other wrestlers I hadn’t heard of, but would eventually know all too well.

So when Bobby Heenan walked into WWF holding a championship belt that looked quite different from that around ?Hogan’s waste. It was professed to be the “real world’s champion”. Then finally they introduced Ric Flair on Superstars. (the only WWF programming I had to latch onto).

And I hated him.

Flair was arrogant. Aligned with Heenan and Mr Perfect. Helped the dreaded, scary Undertaker take out Hogan and vacate the belt. And amazed everyone with an hour stint in the Royal Rumble to win the WWF Championship. Then the fight with Macho Man at WrestleMania 8, preceeded by the “scandal” of these pictures of Flair with Miss Elizabeth.

The next few years, Flair disappeared from my wrestling outlet. And I fell from paying attention to it. Then I started watching WCW thanks to satellite dish and was reintroduced to everything. Including the Four Horsemen.

This is when I started to appreciate more things about wrestling, including the Ric Flair match and promo. Flair had a way with words. And the man could go. Even at his late age, this guy could run a match that guys half his age couldn’t hold a candle to. And Sunday was no different.

At WrestleMania 24, Flair and Michaels tore the house down. Michaels did his part, as he always does, and Flair did his thing. And they told a story. Flair insisting on Michaels bringing his best. Michaels not wanting to “pull the trigger” on Flair’s career. The words “I’m sorry” before the final kick to the face and subsequent pin.

Ric Flair was honored at the Hall of Fame Saturday as the only active wrestler to do so. He was part of an amazing match to end his career. And Monday night, he was presented with an amazing dedication on RAW, and was shown the respect of all of his peers.

Here’s to you Flair. Won’t be another one like you.

Wrestlemania

View Comments

Every year we anticipate Wrestlemania and every year we wonder “is this one going to be as good as the rest? And of course, we weren’t let down in the least…

ECW Battle Royal. After hyping this match the last two weeks, we find out Friday that it is now part of the “pre show” on wwe.com. Which means no one watched it. Shame, because it had a great part where Jamie Noble landed outside the ring on top of Kofi Kingston and climb three guys back into the ring, not landing on the ground the whole time. Otherwise, came down to the big guys and Kane gets the #1 spot at the ECW title.

Finley vs JBL: Belfast Brawl. All of the hardcore crazy action we’ve missed in recent years. This made me hearken back to the days of Fit Finley vieing for the WCW Hardcore belt. Memories… Then Finley forgets he’s not a luchador and does a face plant into a trashcan lid and the outside floor. JBL wins. Not enough leprechaun in this one, but good opener.

Money In the Bank. I feel bad for anyone in this match these days. They have so much past innovation behind them for ladder matches, and every new one appears to hurt even more than last year’s. It’s a fantastic spectacle that makes one worry for the welfare of the contenders, yet cheer at the fact they are not dead. CM Punk gets the briefcase and a step up from ECW’s roster, perhaps.

Batista vs Umaga. I think I was fighting to order Chinese for this one. Maybe I’ll watch it later. Not too big on it…

Kane vs Chavo Guerrero for the ECW Title. Well. Chavo is the new Special Delivery Jones. King Kong Bundy has nothing on Kane…

Shawn Michaels vs Ric Flair. What can I say. This was the greatest way anyone could retire from wrestling. Night 1: getting inducted in the Hall of Fame. (missed it, but have seen clips). Night 2: Lose a retirement match to one of the best in the business in one of the best wrestled matches I have seen Flair do in years. It was very emotional. 36 year career. Amazing.

BunnyMania. Seriously. Snoop was the highlight of this. That pimp cart was great. I give the girls all the credit in the world, but this just felt kind of sloppy. But the lights went out in the middle of the match, so that sure as hell didn’t help. Snoop becoming the new man by Kiss Stealin’ one from Maria after the non-Playgirls stole a win. I think the Lumberjack Divas did one thing the whole match…

Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship. this was a fast paced 3 way match between Triple H, John Cena, and Randy Orton. Rather short for the biggest show of the year (or maybe it just felt it. Randy Orton steals a win and asserts himself as the best heal running today (yes, I finally said it about the gay porn star…)

Floyd Mayweather vs Big Show. A no rules match. Amazing. You always worry about these celeb appearances, but Floyd was in it. He got knocked down, stepped on, knocked around some more. Then his entire posse got involved. It took help and some brass knucks to put Show away. I was amazed that Maweather went such a heel route. Amazing.

The Undertaker vs Edge for the World Championship. this really surprised me to be last. After the high octane matches the preceded, the crowd (and us at home) just felt exhausted…It was slow at first, but eventually started to pick up. The Undertaker still has it, and Edge is just getting warmed up and will get that belt back…

This was also the first wrestling event I was able to experience in HD since Dish Network hasn’t picked up USA, Sci Fi, or our local CW in the new format yet. So this was a new visual experience. It was amazing. I feel like I’m watching wrestling under a fog as RAW is on right now in SD. A few caveats, though entertaining, do exist. As you will see in our yearly WrestleMania recap video, and Veronica’s Tanning Report, you notice more than you ever wished too…

And now, our yearly WrestleMania recap…

Broke down for the Yinz Team…

View Comments

Alright. ALRIGHT! After being bombarded with Yinz Team Cupcakes, Yinz Team banners, and Yinz Team official pages (!!!!) I’m here.

I did do slight research (ie. went to iJustine’s page) and discovered this was something of a rock paper scissors game someone had devised. Interesting. I don’t know where we’ll go from here. But I had a couple ideas for things I’m involved in….

Who knows. Maybe they’ll catch on…

My first 27 years….

View Comments

In my 27 years on this earth…

• I’ve seen a Cold War crumble and a confusing war rise from the ashes of thousands of deaths.
• I’ve seen a wrestling empire grow from the dingy arenas and territories of the days to one of the flashiest live spectacles on television and live today.
• I’ve seen an industry rise from the crash of the early 80’s and rode the wave of electronic entertainment that I still love to follow.
• Superman died…..and came back…..
• Batman broke his back….and then didn’t…
• Wolverine lost his metal…and then didn’t…
• I’ve loved and lost
• I’ve survived almost four years of marriage and think I’m doing better than most.
• I still don’t know who shot J.R.
• I’m in my field doing work I love, if I don’t always love the job itself
• I’ve seen the .com bubble burst, and start to fill up again
• I’ve discovered this amazing thing called “New Media” that has me more excited about the possibilities than I ever have been
• I’ve made new friends and lost old ones. And had a few turn their back on me.
• The last season of Roseanne still pisses me off
• I’ve brought the Mayhem
• I’ve rapped with a monkey on stage
• I’ve connected hundreds of Juggalos together across the region
• I’ve spoken with wrestlers, musicians, and Gladiators.
• I’ve performed on stage, in crowds, in the backyard, and in the ring
• I grew up on He-Man, Transformers, and Ninja Turtles and still came out well adjusted (right?)

I’ve also realized I’m at “that point” where I need to look at things and decide on some things. Like where I am and where I want to be. I’ve been at my job three years. And really, where is it going to take me in relation to where I want to be? I’m working my ass off in the day job and outside of it, trying to get somewhere. It’s time to go for broke and maybe pull the trigger on a few things.

2007 was a rough damn year. And I’m back, baby!

The Downfall of the American Arcade.

View Comments

For many years, I would pine over any random arcade machine I would find. At grocery stores, Jamesway, Chuck E Cheese, the Showcase East in Robinson always had something cool like The Simpsons or X-Men when my grandmother used to take me, and I would always wrangle up a few dollars for the arcade at my local bowling alley after league every week.

My mother would always ask me why I would want to play these games when I had my Nintendo at home. But, like Will Smith said, parents just don’t understand. These games in the arcades were always something unattainable in the way of graphics and just plain awesome. Paperboy’s handle bars were different than my computer’s keyboard. Ninja Turtles was damn awesome in the arcade, compared to its inferior port (in comparison, it was still fun) to the NES.

Flash forward and all of us with our multi-core computers, our Xboxes and Wiis. We went to Dave & Busters for my birthday again this year. Hadn’t been there for a while. And honestly, it hasn’t changed. Still the same racing lineup (including at least 8 Daytona USA games linked up). Same DDR rip off game. Same games in the light gun gallery. More an more, the innovations that were keeping the arcade interesting, such as dance pads, motion responsiveness. I found no interest in the boxing game, because I’ve had it on the Wii for over a year. It’s not very expensive to get a pad and play DDR at home. Guitar Hero brought something new to the home console, inspired from the likes of Beatmania, or Drummania, which all begets the Rock Star phenomenon. And it didn’t seem to help that when the home technology caught up with the arcades, they started to co-op the technology. There have been arcades built on 3dfx, Sega Saturn, Playstation, Xbox, and Gamecube hardware, if I’m not mistaken.

Maybe it’s time to look at something different for these excursions, such as the Games N’At we played at last year. One fee, play all night. Really can’t beat that. And mostly the same games. So unless you’re a big fan of the ticket machines and prizes, it might be a good option. Soon, these places might be replaced by home consoles for those that can’t afford them.

Yay Twitter!

View Comments

Flashback.

The power of Twitter continues to amaze me… So lets roll with this list thing again….

Top 5 Reasons Twitter is awesome…

1. Ghostbusters Night. It rose from the depths and madness of Twitter on a fateful Tuesday morning as everyone when Ghostubusters avatar/quote crazy. Maybe two hours later, a screening was planned at the Creative Treehouse for last Friday, which drew more than 30 people on word of mouth. Amazing. And it gave me a reason to dust off my old Proton Pack!

2. New friends. Missy has recently embraced Twitter. She’s been on, getting mine. But I drop kicked her list and added all the new people she now knows from the recent Podcamp meetings. That, with the aquiring of a Windows Mobile phone, and she’s a fucking addict. She even went on to start her own blog. A practice she’s resisted for years despite my prodding, I’m sure.

3. A common knowledge. It’s like the Borg hive mind. With personality. There are things in each other’s lives that we are all aware of amongst this new circle of friends that makes things even more interesting when we get together in the physical realm. Making social gatherings easier (especially since I tend to be shy in new situations)

4. Chance Meetings… That become less chance. It’s a big city. And it gets so much smaller when we know we are in the vicinity of another who just broadcast from a coffee shop in Squirrel Hill or something.

5. Keep in touch. I’ve found myself trying to sway my father to check up on me electronically. My mother already reads this blog and knows what is going on in my life. I was showing my dad Twitter, and how it works. I know I lead a busy life and we don’t always connect for that phone call home. Somehow a constant feed makes sense to the concerned parent. (especially since his phone line is antiquated and horrible up there) And I hope he will reciprocate with responses of his own when he happens to be on to stay in touch.
