I like to take a minute every once in a while to put things into perspective. Realize things that were fantasy just a few years ago that fit in our pockets today.
That is no more true than with today’s focus. iphone. The little microchip doodad taking the world by storm. This is a process that goes on in my head on a regular basis. A “this is the future” mindset, even though we completely got gipped on the flying car thing. (I’m looking at you Back to the Future 2. You still got 7 years to prove me wrong) This was brought even more to my attention as I watched “Batman Tech” on History Channel Sunday with my brother. They discussed Batman’s ability to take real technologies and make them small. I don’t know how many times they flashed the iphone.
I’ve always done this in a progressive manner. Just two years ago, I was playing Doom RPG on my cell phone. A regular cell phone. While it wasn’t a full fledged Doom game, it was comparable, graphically. So in my hand was something as powerful as, if not more so than that old 486DX-33 computer that filled a computer desk and cost $3,000+ in 1993 when I was introduced full fledged into the world of computers.
The iphone does this even more so. We are talking, especially with the latest update and App Store, a device that fits in my hand, that I can almost replace my laptop with. I can aptly surf the internet, anywhere. (except my dad’s house.)
Of course, with me, I’m a video gamer. So a nice bonus to this was the arrival of gaming on the iphone. Sega is involved. You’ve arrived when the likes of the Sonic guys, Vivendi, and even id Software’s own John Carmack step up with new games, new announcements, and quotes ranging from the iphone being comparable in power to the Sega Dreamcast, to Carmack claiming power reaching that of Playstation 2 and Xbox. The greatest catch, to me, is that people have had this powerful hardware for a full year before being able to even know it was there. I’ve played Super Monkey Ball (but haven’t on the console, in full disclosure). This seems like real gaming on a phone. There are only a handful of real games, mostly racing, Wii ports, and Monkeys, but the real stuff is coming.
So now I am constatnly attached to everything that involves my tech-centric life. I can sit on the train and check my email on the way to work, while listening to some music, checking my morning twitters, and switch up to a video podcast or Super Monkey Ball. One of the Mayhemers tonight told me “It’s not a phone, it’s a life style changing device.” So true.
Next, I might tackle the internet in general.
It’s finally here. A real damn vacation. A real chance to recharge my batteries and let loose.
Almost.
Last year, I didn’t do much for a vacation. I couldn’t go anywhere, didn’t really have the money. But Will was kind enough to bring me along to the middle of nowhere to hang out and play video games for two days. This, plus the cutting of our Christmas office closing and all the things that have come up over the past year that felt like one kick in the nuts after another, and I’m pretty damn frazzled.
This year, I vowed early to make up for it. Travel somewhere. First, I was going to fly. Finally conquer that fear. But after some analysis, I realized that a train would be cheaper and less stressful, and a new experience. So we went for it. That, on top of the Mad Mike up in the Bronx always up for us to come back after our Mayhem Takes Manhattan trip back in January, and the pieces fit together.
The agenda? I leave Wednesday on a 9 hour train ride to Penn Station in the heart of the city. Then, all I plan on is an Ring of Honor show at the Hammerstein Ballroom (old ECW hot spot) and drinking. A lot.
It’s time for Sorg to get away, but no worries, I’ll be back with many stories, and hopefully, some video like last time, as you can see by my last couple WTF Videos, lately.
But before I take off, I’m doing my best to take part in a bit of a “staycation”. This consisted of video games. Lots of video games. I tackled much of Gears of War and started some Halo 2 co-op play. I never thought it’d be that much fun, and I don’t mind the split screen on a larger screen that I have now.
Also, I determined I’m going to rediscover the city a little bit. There are a few things around I have been wanting to see again, or for the first time. Last weekend, I visited the zoo with my mother and brother. Saturday, we hopped the train and walked over to the Heinz History Center in the strip. I don’t think Matt had been over there aside from the last ICP concert at “Club Zoo” where we got pictures to be in the City Paper. The place is pretty cool. I was disappointed that the “Points in Time” wing was closed. This was where the kennywood and steel areas were, from what I recalled some ten years ago when my late grandmother brought me down there. But the surprise was the extensice Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, which emcompassed two stories of the newer section of the center.
And, of course, we had a hilarious came night of Halo with Will, Chachi, MissyJo, and Chachi’s sister. We need more of these.
Forgot to toss this up earlier in the week…
Last WPAJ Interview of the month as I head out for vacation next week!
This week, we welcome Shaky Shake from right here in the Pittsburgh, PA area. He’s putting out music, putting on shows, and looking to make some noise in the area. Check him out at www.myspace.com/theshakyshake.
And, once again Big Daddy Shit and myself return with episode 3 of the CRAPCast. We talk about the new Christian direction for Deface Marketing, shows, vacations, bird poop islands, and more! Check it out on this show page.
In honor of my return to New York City later this week, I thought I’d throw up another video from our last trip back in January. In this one, Chad the Shad finds Dennis Gregory’s bed.
- Dennis Gregory is the current IWC Champion that, I believe Chad, dubbed a “Bum”, and has developed to a big chant whenever he comes out at shows.
- Chad found this after climbing a rock in Central Park.
- I had no idea he had a marker in his pocket.
- I don’t know how many wrestlers have responded “so that was you guys that did the Denny Bum Bed video!?”
- Chad has started to throw change at the ground in front of Denny and shaking bottles of change to get his attention. Because he’s a bum…
A wee bit late. But I started writing this somewhere in my busy Friday! Here we go…
- When you go to the beach, lake, or pool, are you more likely to lower yourself gradually into cold water or to take a determined plunge and get it over with?
I do recall when I was younger, I would do the slower, creeping method. In time, when I became a bit bolder in general, I would just jump in and get on with it. - How is this like (or unlike) your approach to other tasks or ordeals?
I do recall when I was younger, I would do the slower, creeping method. In time, when I became a bit bolder in general, I would just jump in and get on with it. - When someone gives you flowers, are you more likely to let them turn completely brown and gross before throwing them out, or to discard them the moment they take on that sick-flower look?
I hold on to them as long as I can. I take much stock in gifts and hate to throw things away. - How is this like (or unlike) your approach to other gifts, purchases, or relationships?
I typically hang on to things of sentimental value, or that I just think are neat. For instance, I held onto some computer parts far past any life of usability because I considered them a bit of a history lesson of computers. I finally convinced myself to give them to Goodwill. I am a bit of a pack rat that way. - Think of your favorite movie (or a movie you really like, if you can’t think of a favorite). Some people say that the reasons you love your favorite movie are
related to what you value in romantic relationships. How is this true or untrue in your case?
Really? Because my favorite would have to be Ghostbusters. It has comedy, supernatural, science. So I value funny, smart dead girls? No wonder I’m into Insane Clown Posse…
Well that was a weird one too…So much these things reveal about us…
Who Else is Friday 5-ing? (You know you want to join us…)

The Wrestling Mayhem Show welcomes Pittsburgh and international superstar, Super Hentai to the show! We have a full house and have some great discussion about his 10 year career, Japan, IWC, stuffed owls, and so much more!

This is Episode 126 for Tuesday, July 22, 2008. You can get the episode here on Talkshoe, subscribe, and as always, stay tuned to www.WrestlingMayhemShow.com for the latest! The Wrestling Mayhem Show is recorded live and can be heard/viewed from 8 PM to 10 PM Eastern on Talkshoe.com and BlogTV.com.
This is a quicky this week. We have our good from from the Wrestling Mayhem Show, Doc Remedy, reenacting one of his favorite scenes from one of his favorite television shows, Heroes.
- This is from our trip at the end of January where we visited fan of the show, Mad Mike, in New York City.
- We also attended Royal Rumble at Madison Square Garden.
- Surprisingly, as scene like this is not even noticed in New York City by it’s populace.
Back with that Friday5 thing. And make sure to check out the whole gang!
- What was the last meal that caused you to be ill?
I haven’t experienced a food “poisoning” for a good long time. Mostly, I recall a bad time at Perkins where my two Missy’s and myself got exceedingly sick for the next day or so. Then there was a time on the way back from Elmira, NY to visit some reletives when my mother and I stopped at Ponderosa. I had a lot of spaghetti from the buffet…and threw it up as soon as we got home. First major vomiting fit I recall. - Are there any places you never dine anymore because of a bad experience hours after the meal?
I haven’t barred anywhere, but I shy away from the China Buffet(or some similar name) on 88 in Castle Shannon. We would hit it for lunch at work, and I would spend a good bit of alone time that afternoon instead of working. It just makes me feel like crud. - What’s your prescription for dealing with a food-caused illness?
Bed. No social interaction. Disappear to myself. - When friends tell you about coming down with food-caused illnesses, do you avoid the places they name, or do you figure it’s a dice-roll wherever you go?
Some people seem to have more issues than I do. I still go to Subway, but plenty of people have problems with it. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! And if you worry about how your food is handled, don’t eat out. - After numerous citations, a very, very popular restaurant that you’re quite fond of is shut down by the health department until it can get everything up to code. When the health department gives the restaurant the o.k. to reopen, do you go? Nope, I’m there on re-opening day. It should be fixed by then, right?
Before we kick off the latest review, check out my last Dirtball album review over on Loudside.com!
hed pe is a band that’s been on the music radar for a long time.
Across different labels and, these guys have always brought something different, and with their latest release, the D.I.Y. Guys, we get “to know” the band a little more. This set is a full live/new track CD, along with a full length DVD in the package.
On the album side of things, we get a chance to see the raw, unproduced mayhem sound of their live shows and represent some of the best from their two Suburban Noize releases, “Back 2 Base X” and “Insomnia” live from the legendary Key Club in Hollywood, CA. The studio tracks that round out the album are more of what we can expect from the next album.
Suburban Noize has been doing an amazing job of providing great value in their albums by packing in well produced DVDs with music videos, concert footage, and other extras. This time, D.I.Y. Guys doesn’t dissapoint as we have a “sit down” with Jered about everything from music labels, to the road, conspiracy theories, and the conflict arising from Deejay Product’s tagging antics and the havoc it wreaks on Brian Zinger (Suburban Noize head honcho), and Beejay (the tour manager). It’s raw, it’s hilarious, and it rocks.
For the price of a regular CD, you get live tracks, new trakcs, and over an hour of behind the scenes DVD. You can’t go wrong if you’re a hed pe fan, or just getting to find these guys.
You can see my latest interview with Jered of hed pe on Youtube and Talkshoe for the WPAJ Interview
