I Need a Break

View Comments

My blogging has been on the light side, for sure. It’s been a hectic time, for sure.

I’ve had some friends tell me I need to stop and play some video games. It’s kind of hard when you have the deadlines that you know won’t get done if you do that. Then again, some of these deadlines might not get done anyways. On top of that, I’ve been making some moves since the beginning of the year to “move on” with some things.

Hopefully after the next couple weeks, and a few days in New York City to blow off some steam that’s been building off for far too long, I’ll be back at it. In the meantime, I’m doing what needs to be done to keep things going (WMS, WPAJ Interview, CRAPCast, etc.) and they’ll be reposted here. These are the things I can’t let go because, while they’re more work, they provide some personal relief I need (and some real accomplishment, y’know, for the inside.)

But I’m definitely looking for some advice, and some guidance.

How do you blow some steam? Deal with the day to day? Just get a chance to let go in the hectic lifestyles we live.

Drop a comment.

(hed) pe: New World Orphans

View Comments

For many years, I’ve been a pretty big fan of (hed) pe. Over the past several years, mostly thanks to their expanded freedom from signing with the independent label juggarnaut, Suburban Noize Records. Last year, we were treated to their first Live album, paired with a self produced DVD add on with D.I.Y. Guys, and I’m assured by Jered that there’s more to come in that vein.

New World Orphans is something of a continuation of the awareness kick the band has been on since Back to Base X. Spreading the views and awareness of the illuminaty, shadow governments, conspiracies, and existance of things such as aliens to their audience. The band’s roots were always in anti-establishment, along the sex and drugs “fuck you” attitude they’ve been driving for over ten years. But “N.W.O.” seems to be the maximum point of all of that content. Not to say that we still don’t have a few party songs on the album. But that’s a natural since the album spans 24 tracks, some of which will vary depending on the version of the album you receive (I had the oppurtunity to review the “red” cover version of the three).

Guests on the album might be the most varied of the bands’ career. We have labelmate in Dirtball, Big B, Kottonmouth Kings, and Potluck, depending, again, on your version, and Tech N9ne from Strange Music. A general “who’s who” of the underground scene these days. This also reflects in the variety of music on the album, which spans the ore rip-hop and thrash that the band has ventured into since Back 2 Base X, some more metal sounds with their first singel “Renegade”, to more hip hop with many of their guest tracks.

Once again, hed pe has put out an album that is going to span a lot of different genre-bending tastes, and raises questions in it’s content that will range from the curious to “just wrong” based on your views. But either way, they’ll make you think about them.

You can find the (hed) pe New World Orphans album right here.

This is Wrasslin’ Town

For OMGPittsburgh.com

As many know, I’m an avid wrestling fan. Have been since I saw Hogan and Orndorf in that big blue cage on Saturday Night. Still am and have gotten very involved in letting people know about it. Part of the fuel to that fire and love for “the business” has to stem from my surroundings.

Breeding Stars
Pittsburgh has always produced wrestling greats. Bruno Sammartino was maybe the biggest name to come out of the steel city. An Italian immigrant, he went to New York, with the World Wide Wrestling Federation (the precursor to today’s World Wrestling Entertainment) and became the longest reigning World Champion in the company’s history, running from 1963 to 1971, then a second reight from ‘74 to ‘77. Bruno even undercarded a match on the famous Ali vs Antonio Inacki at Shea Stadium in 1976.
Shane Douglas saw time in WWF (“Dean” Douglas), WCW (tagging with Ricky Steamboat for a time), and of course a stint as a manager and interviewer in TNA. But his biggest claim to fame is his part in the rise of ECW as a valid contender. Douglas won the NWA title in a three way dance, only to dump it on the ground and establish ECW as it’s own, independent, fed.

Kurt Angle, of course, is a town hero, winning the gold medal in amateur wrestling at the 1996 Olympics, and went on to an amazing career in WWE, then TNA. I’ve had the pleasure to be at Mellon Arena for his second title win in front of his home town over (just announced Hall of Fame inductee) Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Indy Showcase
But it’s not just the big guys that make this town so great. Pittsburgh is still showcasing tomorrow’s stars. As I’ve discussed in the past, this town is a hot bed for talent and great promotions. NWA East AKA Pro Wrestling Express, runs shows in the city. Far North Wrestling (FNW) runs out of the Butler region, and the International Wrestling Cartel (IWC) that typically runs in Elizebeth, PA. All three show offer a look at the great talent coming up. Sterling James Keenan in FNW and other feds has been all over the world making his name. IWC showcases stars from Ring of Honor (including Delirious, Chris Hero, and more) and periodically will have appearances by TNA stars such as the Motorcity Machine Guns, Samoa Joe, and Eric Young. Many of which were regulars in the IWC’s storied history. CM Punk and Scotty goldman (AKA Colt Cabana) were regulars, and champions, as well.
This Saturday, one of the best examples of all of this comes together as IWC presents “A New Beginning Woooo!” on January 24. Last year, IWC put together a spectacular two day “100th show” spectacular, and the card for this one seems fit to top that. And of course, there’s the guest of honor, Ric Flair. Although I’m becoming more involved in all of this (full disclosure: I’ve been assisting with the IWC web site and ringside filming) I look forward to these shows and look through my lense as a fan with just as mush anticipation as my friends sitting ringside.
If you’re a mainstream wrestling fan, have a passing interest, or are just bored on a Saturday night, really, pick up any of those organizations and give it a chance. You might get just as hooked as I am.

New Digital Stars

I was greatly surprised, and pleased to see that our favorite underutilized talent, Scotty Goldman (Colt Cabana to all of you Ring of Honor and International Wrestling Cartel fans) has his own WWE.com Exclusive show! We’ve seen Scotty put himself out there in his fantastic blog, the best I’ve seen on WWE Universe yet, and now with “What’s Crackin”, it could open some new doors for Scotty Cabana.

The WWE.com video specials have already proven a showcase for some of the lower talent with the Dirt Sheet, Santino’s Casa, and Word Up. Cryme Time has had some success with their comical spots on RAW, but even those are every once in a while, and Word up has given them to let the fans get into them when the Monday night show doesn’t.

Some of the biggest rubs that we’ve seen has to be the Dirt Sheet for The Miz and John Morrison. This seemed to be a hodge podge tag team of two guys that happened to tag, who got together and actually developed an identity as a duo. the Dirt Sheet gave these guys the chance to develop feuds, showcase character, and feel out where they were going. Back this up with the ability they actually possess in the ring, and there’s a reason these guys are all over all three brand shows every week..

So here’s hoping Scotty Goldman has similar success and takes this as a real oppurtunity to move up in the WWE ranks….

WTF Was I Thinking Video: Ladies of Mayhem

View Comments

It’s 3 years celebrating the Wrestling Mayhem Show, and we only let the Y-chromosomes overtake us once…with duct tape.

  • From left to right on the couch are Mayhem Missie, Wife of the Show Missy, Jen of Bricks and Boxes, and the Veronica.
  • My cooperation was achieved by the promise of cake…it was a lie…
  • Doc Remedy and DJLunchbox just might have asked me to duct tape them for the heck of it the next week’s show. I creepily declined.
  • There are two Missy’s on that couch. Or are there?
