La Coka Nostra “A Brand You Can Trust”

View Comments

lacokanostra“Being a thug means never having to say your sorry” ~ Weeds.

That one thing I learned from Weeds. And when you approach A Brand You Can Trust, you need to leave your reservations at the door.  Not knowing much going into this project, I was amazed to open up the booklet to find a who’s who in the hip hop scene.  Ill Bill, Slaine, Everlast, DannyBoy, DJ Lethal and Big Left round out the roster, with guest spots by Sen Dog, B-Real, Snoop Dog, and plenty of other guests that makes this a showcase of hardcore hip hop.

The album rips with guitar ridden beats and ruthless variety.  The album start with “Bloody Sunday” featuring Big Left and Sen Dog is a great kick off, “Choose Your Side” with great samples, “Bang Bang” is smooth with Snoop Dog on the track.   Then we see a few tracks with Everlast that sound…like Everlast.  “The Stain” and “Cousin of Death” are quite a departure from the rest of the album, but not an altogether unwelcome one.

In the end, La Coka Nostra is a great display of why you probably got into hip hop in the long run and is going to be on the medium rotation slot of my play list.

The Conversations

View Comments

At the recent Podcamp Pittsburgh organizational meeting, and was asked the question of what I wanted to tell people about Podcamp.

I suppose there’s a bit of something that I missed from back in the day that is fullfilled by Podcamp and all of the people I’ve met there that have extended from it.

l_53d3ffdbadd25da97ca1f8cff23c563eThe conversation.

Back “in the day” when I only bounced around my small town, there were a select few people that I could have some really interesting conversations over a horridly mixed cappucino at Perkins that would make my mind race.

This first was Matti. that would be his last name, but much like me, his last name was his identity. While Matti wasn’t the most social in class, as I found out, he was one of those people I didn’t hesitate to say hi to the first day of school. He dabbled in Linux, the only true alternative for his insanely analytical mind and for breathing new life into his 200 Mhz Pentium PC long after I tripled my processor across three machines, two of which I built myself. This guy had a different way of thinking about things. He wasn’t conditioned by the typical social misgivings of teenagers in the social rat race. Views on society, computers, and religion would last all night. He’s now married, became a trucker, and is probably the happiest he could be, from what I can see.

The second was Chris. I believe a year under me in school, and a fellow band geek. The last was this fellow named Dave, if I recall correctly. Both had that programmer mindset. The latter actually going to school for it, and often visited on the weekends (again, if I recall).

The point is that these were the people that stretched my brain when I was younger. The conversations that went beyond girls and video games. The conversations that changed my way of thinking to prepare me for what I do today, and that hunger to do so much more. When I go to Podcamp, or sit around a table at Finnegan’s Wake with colleagues in web site design, programming, and the like, we get to talk about ideas and thoughts that keep you on your toes and help you pick up on what you may be missing.  I might not be active with web development anymore, but I love talking about it.  When I go to a Refresh Pittsburgh, or TweetUp, I sometimes find my mind on an informational blowout.  I love to absorb information, as demonstrated by the mass of podcasts and blogs I digest in the week. And all of this is extended with Twitter and our circles of blogs and comments.

So how do you find yourself stretching your mind?

I Love the Cinema.

View Comments

No one calls it that anymore.  It’s “the movies” or “the theater”.  No one calls it “the cinema”.

I was reminded of the reopening of the ominous Hollywood Theater that has taunted me for ages, sitting empty for so long on Potomic in Dormont, PA.  For ages, I always wished I had the resources to restore something like that or the C4 on West Liberty.

The theater attempted to open a couple of years ago, running “second run” flicks for the neighborhood.  I always wanted to check it out, but only my brother was able to check a viewing of The Simpsons there.  Thanks to Veronica reminding me of the first showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show under the new management, I checked out the site to find the new Inglorious Basterds was playing.  After some wrangling of some co-workers, we ventured to check the venue out.

We parked within a block, and just the short walk, you find the streets flooded with the crazy blue neon sign on the front marquee.  We walked in to find a spacious lobby, with a large concession stand and a lounge-esque area on the right side.  The bathrooms, I know, I’m reviewing the bathrooms here, are remeniscant, though not as upkept, of course, as the theaters down town, where you go downstairs to what’s like a lobby for the bathroom.  So I walked up to join my friends, whom decided the balcony was worth checking out.  I scaled the steps to find a cavernous theater space.  The front rows were some 20+ feet back from a nice sized screen, still dwarfed by the size of the room, and an attached stage beneath.  The seats, I’m told, were all replaced, and the place now sports recliner style seats like you would see at Lowes or Destinta nearby.   Lining the back of the seats below, and up on the balcony behind it’s two rows of typical seating, are more lounge tables and seats.  This is most likely for those who like to partake with the theater’s BYOB policy.

Now, I don’t really expect this theater to be so lucky to see first run movies such as Inglorious Basterds all of the time.  But looking at the previous and upcoming lineups of Rocky Horror, Chopping Mall, Troma’s Poultrygeist, and Dead Snow, I’m looking forward to the grindhouse, b-movie feel this place is oozing.  And I’m wasn’t so surp rised after I found that Bruce, the guy behind the insanely amazing (and I wish I had supported with a membership) Incredibly Strange Video that used to grace West Liberty.

I’ve always had a thing for this sort of place, and it’s better than any I’d seen.  I’ve had the fortune to visit the Oaks Theater (Bubba Ho Tep), the Harris Theater (Cowboy Bebop: The Movie), and grew up seeing a couple of Disney movies back home in Greenville at the Jordan Theater…now a church parking lot as of 2004.  I can only hope this theater can thrive the way these others have seemed to the few years I’ve been in this town.

When I started getting into computers, and discovering this internet thing, the first thing I picked up on was CNet…on Sci-Fi (Not SyFy.  Lame).    This was a lineup of shows on Sunday (conveniently after church) in a two hour block.  CNET Central was my first introduction to John C Dvorak, who later stayed on my radar with Silicon Spin, and today with several podcasts he’s involved with.  I don’t recall all of the shows listed on their wikipedia page, but I do recall, for some reason, The New Edge….with Ryan Secrest…

Remember this guy??

Remember this guy??

For some reason, and I blame Jennie, I got into Buzz Out Loud.   I listen to the audio podcast, but it was interesting to check out the CNET TV site.  Now I just subscribed to Digital Life and Dialed In, to check them out.  So, while I love Revision 3 for the quirky, new kinds of shows I dig like Film Riot and Scam School, it’s nice to see what I can level as the equivelent of “Tech TV On Demand” in this day and age.

I suck at Legos.

View Comments

legosWell, not at Lego Indiana Jones.  No one can suck at that game.

But as I grew up, I wasn’t one of those kids who was “great” with the Legos.  I was the kid that made what was on the box.  I didn’t tend to get creative with my Lincoln Logs either.  Maybe it was the specialized sets of Legos.  Maybe I was bothered by the color selection of my blocks.

When I was young, I spent a lot of time at my mother’s work, in it’s variouis iterations.  She was a computer drafter.  So I suppose this was my first seeds in the technology crazy I ended up being.  I loved watching the huge plotter move back and forth as she printed her blueprints for houses, electrical systems, who knows.   I knew I wanted to work in this fashion.

But I sucked at Legos.

So I got into video games.  Tearing apart and rebuilding part of computers.  Something called social media.  Videos.

But I didn’t know what houses would have looked like without the same colored blocks.

You Should Never Forget Another Birthday

View Comments
We like birthday cake...

We like birthday cake...

Seriously. With all of the Myspaces, Facebooks, and Google Calenders that can all interface with your phone, email, or maybe even your toaster, there is no reason to forget someone.

In my recent reading of Never Eat Alone, there was a section just about Birthdays. How people become so jaded. I have always felt weird telling someone aside from my own immediate family a hearty ‘Happy Birthday’.  When a Myspace comes up, or I see many of my Twitter friends giving the big HB openly, I was always afraid of feeling the “me to” effect of tagging along.  I had enough trouble remembering relative’s birthdays without the help from my wife.  Even the exact date of my best friend’s after ten year escaped me (but I was always close enough to plan…and maybe ask again.

But this past birthday for me, I couldn’t imagine how many people just dropped a quick line.

And it felt good.

So in this world of social media, what could be more social than the most important “personal holiday” there is?  There are less excuses for it to slip your mind these days.  I have Google Calendar setup to remind me of the big personal friend birthdays.  So here’s hoping I haven’t moved on from the service, or at least exported all of this, by the time all these birthdays come back around in a year.

Do you reach out for birthdays?  Do you have a system, or is your mind a steel trap?  It’s recommended you do this with your business contacts, but should we worry about sincerity in these sorts of things?

Why He’s Been Silent

View Comments

Because we haven’t gotten him drunk enough yet….

Purple Haze. @thesilentninja’s first drink!! on 12seconds.tv>/center>

Tonight was the celebration of my younger brother’s 21 years on this earth.  We almost had to force feed him the drinks, and I can’t imagine he’s going to be much of a drinker, but this means a new level of freedom for him, such as maybe coming with us to New York City in the near future, or maybe sharing a 649.

I just hope he doesn’t talk too much when he drinks…
