Dr. Espling always told me I had something with this site, and I always took it with a grain of salt. That I had something that the groups would want to promote through, something to make the site bigger. One day, in September 2006, I received an email from about interviewing some Suburban Noize artists. It was a surprise. So here was me, the guy who hated the sound of his own voice, setup with his first ever interview (of the audio nature) with Potluck. At the time, I was just introduced to the group via several shows that came through Pittsburgh and the Gathering with them in opening slots and I was digging them.

I didn’t really follow up on this concept. I started an account on Talkshoe for it and really just left it on the side as I was busy with other projects. On a whim, I checked my stats and found that oneinterview had hundreds of hits monthly.  Without promotion or fresh content.  8 months later, I had a fantastic interview with Dogboy, who was hopped up on several Rockstar drinks, and was on a roll.  I had the fortune to talk to 2 of the 3 Kottonmouth Kings.  Talk politics with Daddy X.  Talk with Daddy Long Legs.  Had Marz call Violent J a dick right before me on tape.  Had Big B show us and my wife his junk while I interviewed Jered from hed pe.  Discover that The Dirtball and my wife share Political Science secondary majors.  Had Saint Dog go nuts over our site name.  Psycho Jesus almost got hit by a car during our interview, and went on about Mario Kart.

In the process, I wanted to make sure to give the underground a big rub by interviewing them right alongside the big hitters on the itunes stream.  Whitney Peyton, Crash, H8Trid, Myztery N Sneek, Shaky Shake, No Clue, and so many more.

After all of this, don’t think that the interviews and fun will end along with this site.  whoever continues the name of WPAJ will have an in to talk to these guys, and I’m bringing the Rolodex with me to the new music project.  We may not be the best of interviewers, but you can’t say we didn’t put it down for the last 3 years.  I’ve learned a lot in that time, and hope to take that knowledge on with me.

For 8 years, I’ve run a site called WesternPAJuggalos.com. A fan site for “Juggalos”. Fans of Insane Clown Posse and their line of music. On November 15, I’m closing the site to make room for future projects. So I’ve been inspired to create a countdown after talking to some people at Podcamp Pittsburgh 4 that were in similar situations.

I didn’t get a chance to really get a pumpkin to carve and get into the Halloween spirit with all of the work and Podcamp and such this October.  So I decided to start scouting the iPhone store for some (free) Halloween fun…

photo (1)

iGlowStick. It’s a glow stick.  You shake it, and it turns a color with Halloween icons on it.  Right.   Well, hope there’s some techno music at V-Rock’s party.

photo

I told you!

Halloween Box. That I can tell, this is the official “Halloween Story” that you can read.  And send to a friend.  And that’s really it.

Top 100 Songs for Halloween. An app based around a themed playlist for Halloween tracks.  Note:  Had some issues going back to find this one.  Could have been pulled for having an in store music purchasing thing. )

Halloween Sounds. Basically what it sounds like.  Could be fun.

Halloween Photo. Picture fun is what the iPhone is about. For instance, I revealed our cat, Sampson, as the man eatinng Hell-cat he really is…

Crazy Snowboard Halloween Lite.  This is a Themed demo of a snowboarding game.  Nothing crazy.  Just themed for the holiday.

The Jigsaw Voice has some robust options

The Jigsaw Voice has some robust options

Saw VI.  It’s a lot of movie promo stuff.  but the biggest find here is the “Jigsaw Your Voice” aspect.  Check out my revelation of Jigsaw’s love for Bucca Di Beppo!

Halloween Hotties Backgrounds Free Edition. Pictures of sexy girls in costumes.  And some prompts to buy their video access app.  Great for knowing what’s NOT going to be at your local Halloween party (unless it’s an Awesome Gay Halloween party, so NBC tells me

I challenge you to creep me out more than this app does this Halloween...

I challenge you to creap me out more than this app does this Halloween...

iSpinIT Halloween Edition Free Edition. Sort of like the above app.  But they’re 3D sexy girls you can spin.  And save for background.  I suppose for all the guys who loved Tomb Raiders….polygons…

So.  Another Halloween aspect that can go digital.  I wonder if there will be anything good for Thanksgiving before we’re buried in elf bowling and snow globe  apps…

This past Monday, Geocities finally closed it’s doors, and it’s like a piece of you is dead.  When I discovered this thing called the internet in 1997 on my OG IBM Aptiva C66 and blazing 33.6 modem.  At some point, I discovered this Geocities.  It’s neighborhoods were so comforting.  It’s tools and widgets (whatever it was called back then) were a great way to start getting some functionality.   And the animated GIFs.  Oh, those GIFS.  Not to mention the glorious MIDI music.  My ears still ring with that sweet, sweet sound. My first experiences posting pictures and early “blog” content in the most unorganized of fashions, I’m sure.  I loved the access of this free website until I was unhappy with the overlays at one point, switching to Tripod.

So I give you…an homage to GeoCities…

In an effort to write “what I know” I thought I’d start a new series on here for Podcasters.  I’ve been doing Podcasts for four years, and streaming radio for at least a year previous to that, and have started from the simplest of PC microphones to a studio where I’m surrounded by equipment I’ve built up from spare computers and parts.  Over the course of this, and in projects in the future, I’m always experimenting and building on what I know and have available.  Please let me know if you find these sort of articles helpful.

dropboxiphoneA few weeks ago, I was introduced to Dropbox. It’s one of those things that had, and still does, come up on plenty of the podcasts I listen to, and blogs I read.  Since then, I’ve started to integrate it into our work with the Wrestling Mayhem Show.  Dropbox is a product that sets a folder up on your computer (Mac, Windows, or Linux.  I use it on all three platforms).  Whatever you put in that folder gets uploaded immediately, and synced to every other computer with a connected Dropbox folder.

I’ve integrated this by storing the Wrestling Mayhem Show’s assets in this folder.  For our case, we have show intros, outros, weekly music, best of clips, guest liners, and more files that pertain to the show. This folder is synced up with all of the studio computers (four of them.  2 Windows.  2 Xubuntu), my laptop, and my office iMac.  This keeps everything tidy and available in several situations.

  1. A computer goes down. As with recent problems, sometimes the hand me down hardware I end up building the studio from can fail.  Sometimes right in the middle of the show.  This gives me the option to load up the assets on a new computer in the studio, and hopefully, carry on (though likely saddling more tasks on already stretched hardware).
  2. Decentralize your production. Will, aka DJLunchbox, have a folder synced to this.  In some cases, we may have downed internet, or have an emergency, during our live broadcasts.  This way, he can take over and have all of the assets to broadcast and edit the show without me and my hard drive available to him.  This lifts a huge weight on my shoulders that someone else can pick up the slack if something should come up.  Important if you’re working with a team on a show and want to adhere to your attempts at a regularly scheduled broadcast.
  3. Share edit files. Just recently, we started that process of final show production moving over.  With some equipment issues this week, the “good edit” ended up on a rather slow (but still useful) 1.3 ghz machine.  Being on a different sleep schedule due to our varying work hours, I set the MP3 to render (marking about an hour of processing) straight into the drop box, making it available immediately upon completion to my associate.
  4. Remote files access. A nice little free iPhone App was released since I started with Dropbox that allows you to see everything in your folder.  Granted, there could be files that won’t be able to be viewed on your iPhones, but checking on files that are saving to that folder, updates from your colleagues, or sharing show bites and image assets on the go to people can be rather handy.  Files are downloaded on the fly when you select them, if applicable.

I’m using only a 2 GB free account, (though you can get others to join to up that to 3 GB)  50 GB ranks about $10, and goes all the way up to 100 GB.  The 2 is enough for my assets right now (after I converted them to MP3), so should be enough for any show to share these sorts of files.

Mick Foley Took a Barbed Wire Bat to my Soul....

Mick Foley Took a Barbed Wire Bat to my Soul....

As many of you already know, back on WMS 185, I had a run in with TNACallsYou, and hence, CelebritiesCallYou.com, and, well, everything can be explained in this letter I just sent to several relevant email addresses over at TNA Wrestling….

Update: After sending the following letter to TNA’s info and lisencee emails I found on their site (and no further contact with CelebritiesCallYou.com) I received a notice this evening that my refund is now processing.  Squeaky wheel, dude…  Props to TNA for the quick response and listening to a concerned fan.

To whom it may concern,
I have recently had a dealing with an organization working with your name and thought it would behoove you to see how they were treating your brand. In September, I received an email from your newsletter for www.tnacallsyou.com. I read the email the day before my friend’s birthday on September 15, and thought it would be a great opportunity to give him a surprise for his day, and have something to check out to talk about on the next edition of my podcast, the Wrestling Mayhem Show. So I logged on, found myself on CelebritiesCallYou.com, and setup a call with your Mick Foley selections and set it for 8 AM the next day. Nothing. I checked with him several times, thinking maybe I entered the wrong time.

Irate with the fact that I had been carged 3.99 for relatively nothing, I sent two letters to CelebritiesCallYou.com via their contact form. One email as follows:

Sent to CelebritiesCallYou.com on 5/18 at 6:27
“This is the second communication I’ve sent. I used your service on Monday, September 14 for a call to be placed on the 15th, and it was never received, nor my order confirmed. I would like a refund for my charge. Please contact me to clear this up. I used the information included (Michael Sorg; mikesorg@gmail.com) when signing up for the call. Thank you.

I have yet to receive a response, and still hold a charge for the call that did not connect. Being that this company is using you’re wrestlers and brand to market to us, your audience, on your behalf, this appears to be an obvious abuse of your audience. I feel that you need to know what your licensees are doing in your company’s name. I have been very vocal on blogs and podcasts to hundreds of listeners and readers on the scam that is CelebritiesCallYou.com, and not to get involved with it’s TNA related content.

Tha-Family-FlyerI’ve talked a lot over the last four years about Podcasting. How to do it. How to make it worth it.  I realize that I had a little practice before we got into this thing called “Podcasting” and already had a great community behind it.

I can’t remember the timeline.  I think “Assassin” from over at PAJuggalos.com invited me to have a show on his fledgling streaming radio station.  Eventually, we had at least three seperate “stations” and I was “managing” DJ’s from as far away as California.  Until this day, I know a guy named “Shady Killa” in Michigan, Fat Tony from Western Ohio, and “DJ Elf” from California.  Some names still on my Myspace list to this day.  Some I actually had the fortune to meet at the Gathering of the Juggalos over the years.

Our method was simple enough.  I, like my cohorts, setup a ShoutCast radio stream, and managed it through that great program called Winamp.  I had reservations at first, y’know, since I’ve always hated the sound of my own voice.  But I endured for some reason.   The server was setup.  Schedules were made.  Streams were up, down, disappeared.  DJ’s came and went, inexplicably.  But there were always a good four or so that ran regularly over the time we did this.  Auto servers were setup, which was nice to listen to throughout the day. Man.  It was really nice when we didn’t have to worry about these “streaming copyright” issues so much.

We managed about 15 simultanious listeners on the server (thanks to that blazing Comcast Cable speed for 2005).   It wasn’t a lot, but it was fun to max that out, and open a chat (we experimented with AIM group chats, Java Chats, etc over the time).

At some point, I decided to get on the mic after Monday Night RAW and talk about it.  (I was about out of school and working on that job/career thing, so I had some time on my hands.)  And eventually, the Wrestling Mayhem  Show was born when we discovered Podcasting.  This is why we have been big on the “raw and live” format that we hold to this day.  Our show was born on the live element and the interaction, so we’ve been practicing this policy longer than most realize.

3g-iphone-rumor-infineon-1I don’t know what it is, probably my inner geek getting all crazed, but I like what’s going on in the cell phone realm right now. The amount of gadgetry is exciting, and the fact that it’s becoming more and more accessible everyday for the common person.

Now, I’m an iPhone guy through and through. I haven’t seen much use in Windows Mobile (though my friend Basick feels different about that fact). Blackberry is fantastic for what it does in the business realm, even though I’ve witnessed my coworkers frustrations with them between the Storms, physical keyboards models, and Verizon’s service not even working in our office building.  Android is an awesome alternative to iPhone.  It’s just too early in it’s development (I didn’t jump on iPhone until 2.0) and T-Mobile has been holding it back on the network side. (Pittsburgh is just now getting 3G through them).

So, if I’ve picked my side, why am I so happy?  Being on the massively winning side sucks.  Look at Windows.  And as long as the iPhone doesn’t completely dominate, there’s a reason to push it to become a better device.  We’re all embarassed to have only gotten both MMS and Copy and Paste in the last four months.  Both of these rudimentary functions that all of the above mentioned phones have enjoyed for a good long time, I’m sure.   Stiffer competition and feature sets will ensure my upgrade path will be clear, and I can migrate all of these games I’ve been playing the last year.  (I’m not willing to buy Wolfenstein yet again…)

So why are things different now?

Marketing: Android has been growing as a device.  The MyTouch is a smoother device than the G1′s clunky interface.  T-Mobile’s run of ads including Jesse James and Whoopi Goldberg are great, but still don’t stick out as much as Sprint’s Palm Pre creapy-harpie-seance-girl-in-a-monk-orgy commercials.  Only with Verizon’s “iDevice iDont” does someone with marketing muscle (we all know about the network people that follow you around by now) that can make Android a household name.

Inovation: Garmin has a phone? A GPS centric phone?  That Garmin??? ’nuff said.

“Step the eff up” effect: Windows Mobile 6.5 looks nothing like 6.1.  Rumors of Microsoft’s “Project Pink” run rampant.  Blackberry Storm screams of “me too”, as does the scores of messaging and less than smart phones by Samsung and LG that pretend to be an iPhone with “apps” and fancy touch screen interfaces.  No one’s perfect, but it’s got the industry thinking of something more than flippers and sliders.

It’s a great time to be a gadget-head in the cell phone market right now.  When my phone does ten times more than my 1993 DOS machine, and at a much smoother click, it’s starting to feel like the future my 12 year old self looked forward to.
