Game 41: Space Invaders

Space Invaders
Taito
1978

There have been a large number of space based shooting games to be released over the many years of video games, all of which owe their existance and over all popularity to space invaders. Say what you will but this game opened the door for others that i will have to play in this journey.

This game once again simple to understand and learn was nothing short of addicting and sometimes difficult.

Monochromatic color scheme, Green and white. rows of little space ships wandered back and forth lowering every so often while you moved left and right firing to make sure that you eliminate the threat before they reached the bottom.

When released in the arcade(i played it on an emulator) in japan they had to print more 100 yen coins due to the amount being used in the arcades being pumped into this machine sky rocketing it into being an instant classic.

Its not often that i quote the book during this but  liked the way it described this game. “If Pac Man is about memory, and Donkey Kong is all about story, then Space Invaders is about panic.”

Chachi Says: while the younger generations will never truly understand the greatness that is space invaders, we O.G.’s(original gamers) know what its all about.
