Wrasslin’ Town

For OMGPittsburgh.com

As many know, I’m an avid wrestling fan. Have been since I saw Hogan and Orndorf in that big blue cage on Saturday Night. Still am and have gotten very involved in letting people know about it. Part of the fuel to that fire and love for “the business” has to stem from my surroundings.

Breeding Stars

Pittsburgh has always produced wrestling greats. Bruno Sammartino was maybe the biggest name to come out of the steel city. An Italian immigrant, he went to New York, with the World Wide Wrestling Federation (the precursor to today’s World Wrestling Entertainment) and became the longest reigning World Champion in the company’s history, running from 1963 to 1971, then a second reight from ‘74 to ‘77. Bruno even undercarded a match on the famous Ali vs Antonio Inacki at Shea Stadium in 1976.

Shane Douglas saw time in WWF (“Dean” Douglas), WCW (tagging with Ricky Steamboat for a time), and of course a stint as a manager and interviewer in TNA. But his biggest claim to fame is his part in the rise of ECW as a valid contender. Douglas won the NWA title in a three way dance, only to dump it on the ground and establish ECW as it’s own, independent, fed.

Kurt Angle, of course, is a town hero, winning the gold medal in amateur wrestling at the 1996 Olympics, and went on to an amazing career in WWE, then TNA. I’ve had the pleasure to be at Mellon Arena for his second title win in front of his home town over (just announced Hall of Fame inductee) Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Indy Showcase

But it’s not just the big guys that make this town so great. Pittsburgh is still showcasing tomorrow’s stars. As I’ve discussed in the past, this town is a hot bed for talent and great promotions. NWA East AKA Pro Wrestling Express, runs shows in the city. Far North Wrestling (FNW) runs out of the Butler region, and the International Wrestling Cartel (IWC) that typically runs in Elizebeth, PA. All three show offer a look at the great talent coming up. Sterling James Keenan in FNW and other feds has been all over the world making his name. IWC showcases stars from Ring of Honor (including Delirious, Chris Hero, and more) and periodically will have appearances by TNA stars such as the Motorcity Machine Guns, Samoa Joe, and Eric Young. Many of which were regulars in the IWC’s storied history. CM Punk and Scotty goldman (AKA Colt Cabana) were regulars, and champions, as well.

This Saturday, one of the best examples of all of this comes together as IWC presents “A New Beginning Woooo!” on January 24. Last year, IWC put together a spectacular two day “100th show” spectacular, and the card for this one seems fit to top that. And of course, there’s the guest of honor, Ric Flair. Although I’m becoming more involved in all of this (full disclosure: I’ve been assisting with the IWC web site and ringside filming) I look forward to these shows and look through my lense as a fan with just as mush anticipation as my friends sitting ringside.

If you’re a mainstream wrestling fan, have a passing interest, or are just bored on a Saturday night, really, pick up any of those organizations and give it a chance. You might get just as hooked as I am.

New Digital Stars

From Sorgatron.com:

I was greatly surprised, and pleased to see that our favorite underutilized talent, Scotty Goldman (Colt Cabana to all of you Ring of Honor and International Wrestling Cartel fans) has his own WWE.com Exclusive show! We’ve seen Scotty put himself out there in his fantastic blog, the best I’ve seen on WWE Universe yet, and now with “What’s Crackin”, it could open some new doors for Scotty Cabana.

The WWE.com video specials have already proven a showcase for some of the lower talent with the Dirt Sheet, Santino’s Casa, and Word Up. Cryme Time has had some success with their comical spots on RAW, but even those are every once in a while, and Word up has given them to let the fans get into them when the Monday night show doesn’t.

Some of the biggest rubs that we’ve seen has to be the Dirt Sheet for The Miz and John Morrison. This seemed to be a hodge podge tag team of two guys that happened to tag, who got together and actually developed an identity as a duo. the Dirt Sheet gave these guys the chance to develop feuds, showcase character, and feel out where they were going. Back this up with the ability they actually possess in the ring, and there’s a reason these guys are all over all three brand shows every week..

So here’s hoping Scotty Goldman has similar success and takes this as a real oppurtunity to move up in the WWE ranks….

Book Review: Between the Ropes

Via Sorgatron.com

So, in full disclosure, I have to tell you that I’ve been a fan of Between the Ropes, the radio show, for several years. I discovered it before even starting the Wrestling Mayhem Show. A lot of the show has inspired me in my own show production, and has entertained me to no end for maybe four years. When Veronica had given me the Between the Ropes book as a gift, I was excited for the prospect.

Now, this book is seperated into two types of content. Spread through out are chunks of chapters about the show, it’s crew, and the antics of their decade of the show. The story of how the show got it’s start, the infamous table piledriver with Jerry Lynn, and the best and worse of all of their guests are detailed.

The second “part” of the book that is bookended by these stories are the detailed histories of the WWE/WWF, WCW, ECW, and TNA. Now, that’s good for people who are new to wrestling, or at least the “insider” side of it. But maybe that’s the goal. A bit of a wrestling handbook by the guys who are the authority in the matter. The only problem is that I read the Death of WCW. While interesting, the story of these companies eventually get muddled with figures and numbers of ratings and gates.

The saving grace of this book are the quotes from the people that were there. Seemingly, they trolled their historic roster of interviews to help give an authentic insider look at the history of wrestling in the last 20 years. Some of these are priceless.

So overall, Between the Ropes is a must for fans of the show, those interested in being inspired by a radio show that’s been there for the long haul, and if you’re interested, find out how wrestling got here, that don’t mind the numbers, especially for the younger fans that haven’t been around since the Mega-Powers exploded…

If you’re interested in the book, help a brother out and pick it up here.

Sorg’s Take: the Year in Wrestling 2009

I forgot I did one of these colums just last year. Thankfully, I was reminded and we’ll keep this tradition going…

The Era of the Injury Continues: While I called yesterday the “Year of the Injury”, this year we saw even more how much of what happens on television is molded by injuries. Cena came back, then went back out the door with injury eight months later.

The year of WTF: CM Punk gets the title out of nowhere, and then looses it just as uncerimoniously. Jericho punches out Shawn Michaels’ wife the hard way. Kane does a SD Jones to Chavo for the ECW strap, then turns crazy and hates short, masked people out of nowhere. Cena came back after the ultimate swerve of stating his return time just days before.

I came around to the heals: This year, I became a big fan of some bad guys. When we started going to IWC, I remember much of the crew hating Dennis Gregory as a wrestler. But the more shows we see, and the more response to the rising “bum” chants and telling the kid in the front row, don’t worry, “wrestling is fake. But that was real”.

The second was Randy Orton. Yes, the gay porn natural that I just wanted to punch in the face. Best. Heal. This. Year. Jericho stepped to new personal hights, and had a great deal with Michaels, but Orton can do it all himself. His return from his injury where he just berated people for two or three months was highlight moment after highlight. His “slither” when attempting his finisher just feels creepy. Kudos, you gym bag crapping asshole!

TNA? Are you still here? Not to bash TNA yet again, but this year proved that something is wrong. I’ve often had spurts of “TNA is doing great right now, it’s made the turn” only to be shat upon by the next ppv. This year, it didn’t muster enough interest for even the regular weekly watching. There’s stuff happening. But nothing to capture the imagination of the regular wrestling fan. But some things they’ve done right. Putting Mick Foley on TV. That’s the guy that cam make any shitty storyline work. Main Event Mafia. It is the old WCW storyline. Done much better. It started with Sting and the epitome of “Crossing the Line” but got muddled with stuff that didn’t make sense. But yet, the whole thing is better than the sum of it’s parts.

Mayhem got Mobile: While 2007 brought fans/new friends to us from Longon and the Bronx, this year, we went there. In January, we visited Mad Mike in New York City and experienced that Cena comeback moment to Royal Rumble at Madison Square Garden. In August, I had a chance to go back to see Ring of Honor a block away at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Will and Veronica headed up to Boston to visit Miss Ashley Hoover. Not to mention visits from both of our guests in December (and Mike in July for IWC Basebrawl).

Pittsburgh Wrestling is Still King: We started with Sandman as a regular. Saw IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Low Ki (now just signed to WWE) Motorcity Machineguns, 2 Cold Scorpio, Davairi (now in TNA), Kurt Angle, Shane Douglas, and two of the greatest ensemble shows showcasing the best of Pittsburgh wrestling in the Devil Budakan Memorial Show and WrestleFest (thought the latter was blown away on attendance by the Penguins in the Stanley Cup, unfortunately. ) The Mayhem followed suit by having a record number of interviews (of which, Super Hentai won the Mayhemmy) Not to mention the rise of two IWC regulars to WWE fame in Evan Bourne (Matt Sydel) and CM Punk.

Matches of the Year

Flair vs Michaels If you didn’t feel it when Michaels whispered “I love you. I’m sorry” before a career ending

Michaels vs Jericho Pick one. the unsanctioned match. The ladder match. This was the feud that stamped the year for WWE, and almost eclipsed the Flair one.

Bourne vs Mysterio Even Bourne is the guy that got a chance to step up to RAW from ECW and made the most of it. Many can take a lesson from this guy with this match, and his Cyber Sunday match with Matt Hardy.

Edge vs Undertaker Hell in the Cell. Edge consistantly does the greatest work. He’s the reason we watched Smackdown. He still eclipses Triple H in storylines on Friday Night. Fantastic. I can’t tell you if the build or the match itself was the highlight. The Foley confrontation. The breakdown laying ringside with his “wife”. The crazy TLC match with Taker earlier in the year. All stuff we’ll talk about for years.

Rowe vs Xion Both of these guys were explosive. This is the title match (from November Pain?) not the tournament match, which was also good. I just remember the Court Time rumbling with each near fall, or Rowe rolling Shiima’s head into the first row with a clothesline.

Demarco vs Xion It was safe to say that no one ever predicted the new IWC title holder would come down to these two, even though the Mayhem was pulling for Demarco the majority of the time. These two had great matches playing their strengths moving up the tournament, and ended it with a good match that showcased both of these guys stepping up to the limelight.
