How about a guest post from everyone’s favorite Cuban: Wrestlefan!
Chikara Pro wrestling is usually a company that wrestling fans truly love or truly hate. You either truly love it for its insane and crazy shenanigans and wacky characters, or you hate it for the said shenanigans and characters thinking there is no wrestling involved. My expectation of extreme amounts of fun and laughs was delivered, but a group of awesome and innovative pro wrestling was also included. Unlike a lot of pro wrestling companies today, each wrestler has their own personality and wrestling style that they are able to display, and here are some of my favorites.
The Super Smash Brothers: One of my personal favorites of both shows I ordered, the dynamic team of Player Uno and Player Dos is one of the tag teams in Chikara that truly connect with the crowd. The combination of the agility and high flying ability of Player Dos and the lovable underdog that is Player Uno creates a perfect team. For those that do not know, Player Uno’s gimmick is that his wrestling shorts has a NES controller on the side which opponents normally use to pause Uno mid match. Combine it with the hilarity of their video game based maneuvers make SSB an attraction to see.
The Osirian Portal: “The Funky Pharaoh” Amasis and “The Devious Serpentine of the Nile” Ophidian are another example of the wrestling and comedy combo in Chikara. From both of my DVD’s, the portal had two matches that showed this with a great dance off against Da Soul Touchaz (Hip Hop Gimmick) and a great high flying and technical match with Cheech and Cloudy (Surfer Gimmick). They are Chikara’s current Campeonatos de Parejas or Tag Team Champions and have made a dominant reign as champions for almost a year.
The Colony: An amazing comedic combo of ants each with their own personality. Fire Ant’s high risk and may I say, explosive, style, teamed with Soldier Ant with the gimmick of all of his moves being combined with a very patriotic salute. The fans love them, they back it up with innovative in ring maneuvers and are definitely a staple in Chikara Pro.
Team F.I.S.T.: The top trio in Chikara and the reigning King of Trios champions of Icarus, Gran Akuma and Chuck Taylor do not need masks or an over the top gimmick to make it in Chikara. Icarus and Akuma, the longest reigning tag team champions and Chuck Taylor, a former Young Lions Cup champion and winner of the Rey de Voladores tournament claim, and for good reason, that they are the most dominant stable in Chikara history. One main reason to check this group of athletes out is Gran Akuma that has obviously trained his style in the art of Japanese pro wrestling with lethal kicks and chops equivalent to the likes of a Davey Richards or KENTA.
The Unstable: The grimy and rude Vin Gerard leads this new Chikara group of misfits as a former Young Lions Cup champion and former masked wrestler Equinox, who lost a Mascara contra Cabellera (Mask vs Hair) match to Chris Hero that caused him to spiral into the dark creature he is today. Vin’s big powerhouse STIGMA is also a former Technico who has turned on the Technicos and also turned into an absolute monster with a mean streak. They round out the group with former “WWE superstar” Colin Delaney who has adapted his style with finishers such as the Peoples Elbow and Attitude Adjustment.
Tim Donst: With his headgear and singlet, Donst represents an all American wrestler that topples the likes of Jack Swagger and that pill gobbler Kurt Angle. However, he doesn’t stop with just grappling on the mat as he does a lot of great innovative maneuvers.
Combined with great Indy stars with the likes of Claudio Castagnoli, Mike Quackenbush, Delirious, Eddie Kingston and “Sweet and Sour” Larry Sweeney that can help these stars I listed. Another amazing part about Chikara is the ability to bring in wrestlers that may not be as well known to the entire Indy world. For example, the likes of The Best Around, Sami Callihan, Shiima Xion and Johnny Gargano. Production of their DVD’s is great which also stresses my point for wrestling fans to buy them. However, I do agree that the best way to experience Chikara is to visit their live shows all over Pennsylvania as well as other parts in the Midwest and East Coast.
Also, I recently created an online petition to bring Chikara Pro to the great folks of Pittsburgh. I have 10 signatures and if I can get around 30-40 I think we have a chance to bring them to the Steel City. Please sign, it is free and you’re information will not be shown.

It’s a telltale sign of someone in the wrestling biz that will not be denied his stardom. Typically, when you hear that someone has been “future endeavor’d” by the Big E, and you don’t see them pop up on TNA or ROH within 6 months, these wrestlers seem to be relegated to obscurity. Perhaps hanging up the boots, or you’ll simply be lucky to find them on your local independent wrestling promotion’s card. But in rare instances, you get someone that steps up regardless. Matt Hardy comes to mind at first. Aside from the interesting circumstances of his first departure, he was vocal all over the internet with videos and blogs. He even set the groundwork for The Matt Hardy Show, which still exists today. The most recent example is Mr. Kennedy….Anderson….Anderson has been active. Just days after being let go, and speculation of it being from a near botched move on Randy Orton, or Kennedy hurting his arm just weeks after returning, he blasted back on his own site with blog posts and a silent video of him stretching out his arms. Since then, he’s released no less than nine episodes of how he’s spending his extended vacation (read: 90 day no compete), exploringTwitter, and letting us know how Take note, and scope the videos. And in the meantime, check out the origin of Doc Remedy’s fashion sense…
Sorg is back, and might have eating sugar for a week straight. We cover the fanmail to discover a large backlash from the TNA Impact 200th episode and where they’re at, discuss the state of indy wrestling and the recent shake ups in the Pittsburgh scene and what it could mean. Then we talk with our MMA correspondant, Dawn Papuga, to talk UFC 101, and the upcoming Cyborg vs Corano fight. We then talk along with wrestlingfan about the recent RAW GMs, TNA creative shake ups, and…Sorgstock 2010???

If you’re under the age of 12, this may be a spoiler alert on life:
When was that young, single digit, age, I really had two beliefs that are infallible. Two beliefs that would lead to fights in the playground and knockout blows on the school bus.
Santa Claus is real.
Wrestling is DAMN real.
Yeah, I was the kid that had to be subjected to the assholes in his class, who figured it out way too early, telling me Santa was fake. No way he could fly to all those houses. Anyone ate that many cookies along with their milk they’d be diabetic in an hour. The usual.
And I faltered.
But you could not tell me that Hulk Hogan did not body slam Andre the Giant at WrestleMania 3 in front of 90,000 fans. You couldn’t tell me that just because there was a cartoon, it wasn’t real. I did grow up in the era of a cartoonbased on Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Bo Jackson. You couldn’t tell me that these guys didn’t retire to seperate locker rooms after the match.
But at some time, things started to fall apart. The logic. The myths. They didn’t begin to add up.
Why were all of the claymation specials so different. Why didn’t they talk about Santa at the New Year’s Eve Mass.
And Hogan got beat by the Ultimate Warrior and Sgt. Slaughter went to the dark side.
Of course, all of this is out in the open. Bad Santa and Ready to Rumble taught us this.
